ISTANBUL, TURKEY (28 MARCH 2025): The robust growth in food product trade between Malaysia and Turkey underscores the strong potential for business partnership within the global halal market.

In January 2025, the total trade of food products between the two countries reached USD 154.93 million, a significant 55.3 per cent increase compared to USD 99.76 million in January 2024. Malaysia’s exports to Turkey in this sector rose by 57.6 per cent, while Malaysia’s imports from Turkey grew by 33.4 per cent during the same period.

“This surge in food product trade between Malaysia and Turkey mirrors the vast opportunities for partnership within the global halal industry, projected to reach USD 5 trillion by 2030, as reported in the Global Islamic Economic Indicators 2023 (GIEI) report. Malaysia and Turkey are well-positioned as major players in the halal industry, to collaborate and meet the increasing demand in this expanding market,” said the Director of MATRADE Istanbul, Sadat Foster Maad.

He added, Malaysia stands out as a global leader in the halal industry, thanks to its globally recognised halal certification system, which ensures that the country’s halal products adhere to the highest standards of quality and compliance.

Furthermore, Malaysia’s government actively supports the growth of the halal sector through policies such as the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) and the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030, alongside MATRADE’s National Trade Blueprint (NTBp). This, added with Malaysia’s strategic geographic location and diverse demographics enables it to leverage and create strong trade linkages with the regional market.

“Malaysia’s strategic focus on becoming a global halal hub has cultivated a thriving export cluster, attracting international companies seeking high-quality halal products and services. Building upon this strong foundation, Malaysia is now rapidly gaining momentum in high-value sectors such as halal pharmaceuticals, halal logistics, and food technology, further diversifying its halal export portfolio and promising significant growth in the years to come,” Sadat said.

The Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) will organise the 21st Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) from September 17-20, 2025, at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) in Kuala Lumpur. MIHAS, the world’s largest halal trade show, will further strengthen Malaysia’s position as a global hub and supplier of halal products and services in the region.

MATRADE Istanbul invites buyers, importers, and distributors in Turkey to participate in the hosted International Sourcing Programme (INSP), a tailored event designed to facilitate effective business matching with Malaysian suppliers, manufacturers, exporters, and service providers at MIHAS. The 2024 MIHAS INSP facilitated connections between 330 international buyers and 800 Malaysian sellers, generating RM 2.52 billion (USD 568.51 million) in potential sourcing value.
