Philippines To Establish “Halal Town” to Celebrate Islamic Culture and Cuisine

Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso has endorsed the creation of the city’s first “Halal Town,” a dedicated cultural and culinary district aimed at celebrating Islamic heritage and strengthening ties with the Muslim community.

The announcement came during a meeting with National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) Regional Director Dimapuno Datu Ramos Jr. on Friday, August 29, 2025.

Modeled after Manila’s vibrant Chinatown and Koreatown districts, Halal Town will host cultural events, and provide a platform for Muslim-owned businesses.

The mayor also proposed a certification system for restaurants serving traditional halal food to ensure authenticity and quality.

“It is high time we establish a Halal Town as Manila continues to grow as a culinary destination,” Domagoso stated. “Here, no one is discriminated against—everyone is important.”

Director Ramos applauded the initiative, noting that it builds on the city’s ongoing efforts to support Muslim residents, including the development of Manila’s first Islamic cemetery and the formation of the Muslim Consultative Council.

Project grows religious inclusivity while boosting local tourism and Muslim economic opportunities. Detailed planning involving cultural organizations and business stakeholders is set to begin in the coming weeks.
