A judge in Iowa has sentenced two brothers who own companies that distribute and certify halal food products after they pleaded guilty to federal charges.
Also to be sentenced on Feb. 25 are Midamar Corp., Islamic Services of America, and two of Aossey’s sons.
After every successful prosecution comes the sentencing. But in several criminal cases involving food safety, sentencing is turning out to be pretty complicated.
The order was entered after the business entities each pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud.
Midamar reached final settlement agreements with the US Department of Justice and USDA resolving charges stemming from a December 2014 indictment of the company.
After a 3.5-day jury trial in July, Aossey was convicted on 15 counts, including conspiracy, making false statements on export certificates, and wire fraud.
Midamar does not accept these allegations and is now seeking to understand what the government is basing these allegations on.
