Denmark enacted a sweeping ban on unstunned religious slaughter of animals Monday, prompting a furious backlash from Jewish and Muslim community representatives.
Organised by Samia Hathroubi, co-ordinator of the Foundation For Ethnic Understanding, was formed to respond to growing Islamophobia and anti-Semitism in Europe.
“There is no ban on Islamic slaughter in Denmark, and animal sacrifice according to Islamic principles is still legal in Denmark,” said Danish Embassy.
Slaughter is not normally conducted without anesthetizing in Denmark and the new law only legalized the ongoing practice.
The Danish Islamic Faith Society and 35 other Muslim associations joined together to stop what they say is non-halal meat (stun bolt) sold as halal.
